Recently, we investigated which were the most expensive ZIP codes in North Carolina. Now, we’ve moved up to North Carolina’s northern neighbor, Virginia. When it comes to geographic units, Virginia is an interesting place. It has counties like most other states, but it also has tons and tons of independent cities that double as counties functionally. Fortunately, Virginia is not unique in that the state is divided up into ZIP codes.

Read on to find out the most expensive ZIP codes in Virginia in 2024, based on the latest data from Zillow’s home value index.

The Most Expensive ZIP Codes in Virginia

Relying on data from Zillow’s home value index, as well as the Census Bureau’s 2023 American Community Survey, we analyzed thousands of ZIP codes across the U.S. as part of a general survey. From there, we focused our attention on Virginia. The Zillow home value index tracks (as of November 2024) the home values of 758 ZIP codes in Virginia. As part of our analysis, we took into consideration the latest monthly home values Zillow has — November 2024 — as well as the average of 12 months of median home values from December 2023 to November 2024.

Some very clear patterns emerge from this analysis. The majority of the most expensive ZIP codes in Virginia are contained within the Washington, D.C. metro area. And northern Virginia in general hosts the majority of the most expensive ZIP codes.

Below are the 30 most expensive ZIP codes in Virginia.

The Top 5 Most Expensive ZIP Codes in Virginia

ZIP code 22066 is the most expensive one in Virginia. This ZIP code covers Great Falls, whose northeastern border is the Potomac River. It’s within the Washington, D.C. metro area, though it can take a while to drive there from the capital. ZIP code 22066 has always been expensive, but over the last five years home values have risen by nearly 50%. In November 2019 the median home value was about $1.058 million and grew to more than $1.571 million by November 2024. The year-over-year appreciation was substantial as well, 6.5% from November 2023 ($1.427 million) to where it stands today.

The No. 2 most expensive ZIP code — 22101 — is centered on McLean, a well-known place of affluence. The Census Bureau only tracks median household incomes up to $250,000; above that, it is denoted as “$250,000+”. That’s the case with ZIP code 22101. Meanwhile, its average household income is a whopping $359,152. Well over 60% of households in ZIP code 22101 earn $200,000 or more. Home prices have always been elevated in this ZIP code, having a median home value of $1.099 million in November 2019. Still, home values appreciated by nearly 40% over the next five years, reaching more than $1.536 million by November 2024.

The No. 3 most expensive ZIP code in Virginia — 22207 — is also northwest of D.C. and is sandwiched between McLean and Arlington. ZIP code 22207 covers a number of neighborhoods and communities, like Bellevue Forest, Walker Chapel, Rock Spring, Riverwood, Woodmont, and High View Park, among others; it’s also home to Marymount University. Home values appreciated by 30% over the last five years, from just under $1.013 million in November 2019, to over $1.316 million. The year-over-year growth is comparatively more impressive, at 6.6% from November 2023 to November 2024.

The fourth most expensive ZIP code is 22027, which is centered on the census-designated place (CDP) of Dunn Loring. Its eastern border is I-495, the Capital Beltway. Here’s another ZIP code where the median household income is in excess of $250,000 per year. The mean household is, unsurprisingly, higher, at $337,083. Back in November 2019, the median home value was still under $1 million, at $923,234. It then grew by 38.2%, reaching more than $1.275 million in November 2024. Again, like the other top five most expensive ZIP codes in Virginia, this one’s year-over-year growth was the more impressive figure: 6.3%, from roughly $1.2 million to $1.275 million.

The fifth most expensive ZIP code in Virginia is 20197, which is centered on Waterford. This ZIP code is much farther from D.C., well up the Potomac River and near the West Virginia border. It’s more rural and has more space than the other top five most expensive ZIP codes in Virginia. ZIP code 20197 also experienced the biggest five-year growth in home values out of our top five: 61.2%, from a median of $759,473 in November 2019 to over $1.224 million in November 2024. ZIP code 20197 has some interesting income figures: Most of the other expensive Virginia ZIP codes have mean household incomes that are markedly higher than the median, an indication of higher income households pulling the average upward; in ZIP code 20197, the average household income is only about $4,000 higher than the median, $237,764 versus $233,777.
