Chelsea Houska DeBoer has been a household name since her teenage years, first appearing on MTV’s 16 and Pregnant and later on Teen Mom 2. While she openly shared the challenges and chaos of young motherhood with the world, she’s now showcasing her happily ever after on HGTV. DeBoer stars alongside her husband, Cole DeBoer, in the home renovation series Down Home Fab, which premiered its third season on May 27, 2025. After drawing 7.3 million viewers last season, the DeBoers are busier than ever with their Sioux Falls, South Dakota-based home renovation business.
I recently spoke with DeBoer about the show, working with her husband, and what it’s like to open a retail shop—all in front of the cameras.
Season Three
This season, reality hits home, almost literally. In the premiere episode, the DeBoers are interrupted mid-project by a phone call informing them that a car has crashed into their soon-to-open retail store. While design hiccups are common in home makeover shows, this twist is beyond anything even the savviest reality TV producers could script. Yet, the couple’s first reaction—making sure no one was hurt—reveals their genuine character.
DeBoer tells me, “I think this season is more raw. It shows more personality, it shows more of us actually balancing all of the different parts of our life. Things are chaotic at all times over here and I’m glad to be showing the realness of that!
Cowboy Contemporary
Each of the eight episodes features a different makeover in DeBoer’s signature Cowboy Contemporary style.”This aesthetic is very Midwest-meets-West, with a touch of glam and a whole lot of fun.” DeBoer describes it as a blend of rugged charm with clean, modern design. “We like to mix natural textures like cowhide, wood, and metal with sleek lines and bold accents. It feels elevated and welcoming.”
She also feels like the third season marks a new era for the show, showing her evolution as an interior designer. “This season just feels extra special and different from previous seasons. We want to make sure we are always leveling up as we go and I think you can see that in the projects that we do. I feel like I’ve really honed in on what my personal style is and being able to sprinkle that into my designs,” explains the reality star.
Still, Chelsea has appreciated the challenge. “It’s so fun to dive into someone else’s style! It pushes me out of my own comfort zone and helps me grow as a designer for sure! And then seeing their reactions to the completed space, that will never get old!”
But most importantly, she is incredibly grateful for her life.
“It’s been a really exciting year for us! We always say we thrive in chaos—and it still holds true. Somehow, we just make it through. We try to remind ourselves that yes, it’s a busy, busy time in our lives, but it’s all because of such incredible things. Being able to stay grateful for everything we have—and for the reasons we’re so busy—really helps. I think looking at it from a place of gratitude is what gets us through.”
Episode One
In the first episode, DeBoer renovates the home of a single mom who is a successful entrepreneur but definitely struggling to make her space work for both her business and family. The two women truly connect and end up designing spaces that feel equally stylish and practical.
“I’ll always have a soft spot for single moms and just all moms in general,” she tells me. “To hopefully take some weight off of Madison’s shoulders for her, so she has one less thing to worry about, that feels really good. She doesn’t need to be worrying about her home, she already has enough on her plate!”
Down Home by DeBoers
This season also covers the opening of their retail store, which sells a variety of items in the DeBoers’ signature style. From furniture to accessories, it’s the perfect curation of chic and kitschy. But it’s also a real business venture, according to the reality star.
“Down Home by DeBoers is so special to us. To be able to have an actual brick and mortar and see people coming in to check it out has been so exciting. It really is an extension of everything we love. The vision was to create a place that feels warm and welcoming. Making it an experience for customers, whether they are looking for a candle, a small home accessory or need to furnish a whole room—we want to be the place for that!”
The DeBoers also launched an e-commerce platform in 2025 (just in time for the premiere), which is a great way for those who won’t be in Tea, South Dakota anytime soon to shop the look. “Our online store is an extension of everything we have built in person. Same curated pieces, same lived in, western inspired style. We really worked hard to make it feel like you’re walking through our shop, even from your phone!”
Working Together
But perhaps the best part for the husband-and-wife duo is working together. “We are literally best friends. We enjoy being together all the time. We will go argue over a tile selection and then go laugh over lunch. It’s all about balance and making sure we are enjoying the little moments. We are a team and how lucky are we that we get to experience all of this together?”
Down Home Fab airs Tuesdays at 8:00pm/7:00 central on HGTV.
