Legend has it that John Jacob Astor, for whom the enclave was named, never actually set foot within the New York City neighborhood of Astoria. No matter. These days lots of other folks are stepping into this West Queens bailiwick, drawn by qualities that include a burgeoning foo d scene, a location highly proximate to Manhattan, a beguiling history and most of all, Astoria’s comparative affordability vis-à-vis neighboring districts. “There has been a huge influx of people coming in from Long Island City who are priced out of Long Island City and decide their next move is Astoria,” says Arlinda…
Once upon a time, holiday shopping used to be a sprint — shoppers lining up at dawn on Black Friday, braving the crowds to snag that perfect holiday deal. Today, the holiday shopping season feels more like a marathon, with ‘deal days’ stretching from first week in October to Christmas. The trend is transforming not only how people shop, but also how retail property managers operate. Retail property managers are shifting gears, working with retailers to keep up with shoppers who are no longer waiting for one big day, but dipping in and out for deals all season long. The…
The revival of iconic shopping strip Coco Walk isn’t the only sign of revival in Coconut Grove, the Miami neighborhood famously dubbed “a bit Bahamian and a bit bohemian.” In addition to continual waves of new boutiques and exclusive restaurants, palatial properties have sprouted in the colorful enclave, helping author the next chapter in the storied history of The Grove, the oldest continuously inhabited district in Miami-Dade. Coconut Grove’s chronology extends all the way back to the years immediately after the Civil War. Founded in 1873, the enclave ever since has witnessed more than its share of highs and lows.…
While real estate experts frequently advise homeowners to consider neutral, middle-of-the road options, the latest U.S. Houzz Bathroom Trends Report reveals that many homeowners are electing to prioritize personalization over resale value. Houzz senior editor, Mitchell Parker provides insight and photos to demonstrate these popular bathroom trends. Trend 1: Eclectic Style Increases In Popularity According to the Houzz report, transitional style still reigns as the most popular choice (23%), following by contemporary (16%), and modern styles (15%). However, Parker tells me that eclectic style has increased from 3% to 5%, and is now tied with farmhouse style. Trend 2: White…
Barbiecore, inspired by the Mattel doll and hit movie, took the world by storm and was the top ‘core’ in 2022. However, by 2024, several other cores — or home design aesthetics — gained steam. No one would consider buying a car without first kicking the tires and taking it out for a test drive. Yet when folks ponder an even larger purchase – that of a luxury home – they sometimes have to base their decision on little more than a walk-through. Or do they? A number of luxury second home communities are permitting would-be buyers to take the home out for a test drive of sorts, by letting them stay a while in the residence. That’s the experience that awaits buyers at Loraloma, a private community in the Texas Hill Country southwest of…

Think of the history of Venice and grand canal-side palazzi come to mind. But from the 16th century to the fall of the Serenissima (the French-occupied Venetian Republic) in 1797, noble families would decamp from these palatial dwellings in the summertime, journeying by river on luxurious canopied floating vessels called burchielli. This seasonal exodus to the countryside became a pause from city life and oppressive heat, a time for louche and lavish recreation in family villas. Today, some of the more than 4,000 Palladian villas, purpose-built for pure pleasure across the Veneto region, remain heritage monuments on the tourist trail,…
It’s hard not to love viral sensation Emily Morrow, better known by her social media handle, ReallyVeryCrunchy. While her humorous sketches with her reluctant (but likely only on camera) husband, Jason, portray an elevated and semi-satirical version of what it’s like to be a crunchy family in a world of fast food and toxins everywhere—off-camera it’s safe to say, Morrow is definitely crunchier than most. And while those who also live a crunchy lifestyle will relate to her references to elderberry syrup and why walking into a room with plug-in air fresheners immediately causes an anxiety attack, there is truth…
This past July, a hot-off-the-presses report delivered fresh evidence of Denver’s acute housing shortage. Entitled “Regional Housing Needs Assessment,” the report prepared for Denver Regional Council of Governments by ECOnorthwest revealed the region must build 511,000 units in the next 25 years to meet current and future housing needs. It’s not hard to understand why. The Denver region has witnessed swift population growth this century, tallying a 17 percent increase in residents just since 2010. Periodic building booms have not produced enough housing to stay apace of population and job growth. Home prices and rents have ballooned, rising much more…
When you see or hear the name Pulte, you probably envision a tract of spacious, modern suburban homes in bucolic master planned communities. While this is accurate – PulteGroup’s Homes division is the third largest homebuilder in the country, according to Builder Magazine’s latest Top 100 list, and has sold 800,000 homes since the company’s 1950’s founding – it is not the sole reason for its distinction as a leading builder. What you likely don’t know is that 95 of its homes completed in the last 11 years have been adapted for and given free to injured veterans and their…
